We’re back!
Housekeeping notes: Next week, paid subscribers will get ET Watch Home, a series for this year only on Czech New Wave movies. This month’s movie is actually Slovak: It’s Birds, Orphans, and Fools (1969), which you can stream on Eastern European Movies dot Com if you are so inclined.
Paid subscribers to this newsletter also get the premium version of The Political Cycle, a weekly podcast I co-host on politics in the US, UK, India—and the wider world (yes, we just rebranded and are proud of it and you should listen!).
With that! Onto news, views, and Jews.
THE NEWS
For the Forward, I wrote about North Carolina gubernatorial candidate Mark Robinson, whose hateful comments about Jews evidently weren’t an issue for Republicans until he started polling disastrously.
This week on the podcast, we talked about xenophobia in US (and Indian! And Swedish!) politics.
A Republican senator couldn’t help himself from spewing hate at a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing on hate crimes.
New Lines has a worthwhile piece on rape culture in India.
Devastating floods have hit Central and Eastern Europe.
MY VIEWS ON…
…what you should do this weekend
I’m visiting my family so this will be short:
This weekend I think you should take a long walk, hydrate, have some wine or some tea or coffee depending on time of day, eat a bagel, get some Indian food, and maybe watch You’ve Got Mail.
AND SOME STUFF ABOUT JEWS
I found this piece about Holocaust education in Albania—the only European country to end World War II with a higher Jewish population than it started with, because it hid and saved Jews no matter where they came from—very moving.
Per a Siena poll, New York Jews prefer Trump 54 to 44.
Speaking at an event on antisemitism, Trump said Jews will be to blame if he loses.
